Song Lyrics

They say every song tells a story … we’d like you to be be able to read the stories, not just hear them!

Backwoods Home

Goin' where nobody's gonna find me
I think I’m gonna go and put myself away for a long, long time
With a smile.
But livin' in these woods is so damn lonely,
I want to have you with me in backwoods home, and you'll see
You belong way up here with me.

I'm gonna take you home - with a smile.

The daylight comes alive without a warning,
sunset comes around with a smile.
I'm gonna have you here by the moonlight,
Its shining off your hair and it sure does make me wild every time.

The mountain air is fresh upon our senses,
We'll light a fire when the wind is blowin' in to keep us warm,
In our backwoods shelter from the storm.

So I'm comin' home, so I'm comin' home back to you.
I'll make there tonight, I'll be back by your side again tonight.

The daylight comes alive without a warning,
sunset comes around with a smile.
I'm gonna have you here by the moonlight,
Its shining off your hair and it sure does make me wild every time.

The daylight comes alive without a warning,
sunset comes around with a smile.
I'm gonna have you here by the moonlight,
Its shining off your hair and it sure does make me wild every time.

And in our old age we'll sit out on the porch
riding our rocking chairs, smiling all the time,
Thinking back on all of our times.

In our backwoods home…
Moose Mountain

There's a place called Moose Mountain where my mama used to roam
Where she spent her childhood days
As I drive down the dirt road I look over at the open field
It took everything from them, but there's nothing left to give

As I walk down through the field there's a hole in the ground
And a rusty old tractor next to where the house burned down
But there's never a sad look on my mama's face
As her thoughts take her back to the old home place

Memories of an old home place
Memories that linger on my mama's face
I want you to know that I will always go
Back with you to the old home place

This happened a long time ago when I was not around
Granddaddy can barely walk but he still gets around
And granny's still alive too and we go back every now and then
But the hole is still in the ground where the old farm used to stand

Memories of an old home place
Memories that linger on my mama's face
I want you to know that I will always go
Back with you to the old home place
I’m Fine

In the heart of our passion’s fire
Lies the source of one man’s desire to fly
I’ll fly
Embers fade but we can’t stop trying to
Sift the ash ‘til there’s no denying the signs
The signs

Still we’ll say when they ask us today, we’re fine
Though we’re crying inside we just keep on saying we’re fine

Always more that we’re striving for than we
Let on to any who ask how’s life
How’s life
Deep inside what we’re trying to find are the
Final rewards but we just don’t have the time
No time

Still we’ll say when they ask us today, we’re fine
Though we’re crying inside we just keep on saying we’re fine

No one to blame but ourselves for the pain
That comes from the loss of our dreams
Maybe today I’ll come in from the rain
And start a new game, a brand new plan
I’ll say what I feel, so come hold my hand

Have to say it will all be ok ‘cause that’s
What they’re expecting to hear even though we’ll be lying
We’re lying
Maybe someday we will let truth escape and we’ll
Capture an ear that will listen when were not so fine
That’s fine

And that’s all it will take so we’ll honestly say we’re fine
Just a little compassion and everyone will be fine
I’m fine
So  fine
That’s fine
Somewhere In Your Mind

Somewhere in your mind there's something going on
Something that I just don't understand
You say you need a separate life, and time away from me
That puts questions in my heart that I thought would never be

Somewhere in my heart there's something that I feel
Something I wish I didn't understand
A pain that burns me deep inside, and puts a fear in me
That once again I've lost at love will I ever win this game

Somewhere in our hearts and minds there's something that is gone
I think it's time we stop and bring it back
Or is it just too late, has this all been in vain?
Please talk to me and tell me what is somewhere in your mind

Somewhere in your mind there's something going on
Something that I just don't understand
You say you need a separate life, and time away from me
That puts questions in my heart that I thought would never be
Five Days On the Run
by Scott Sanborn

Didn’t mean to snuff his life out, like a flame in a hard rain
Didn’t mean to shoot him down like a hound,
Wreaking havoc in the chicken pen
Even though the man was making time with you while I was out of town
Didn’t mean to shoot him down …. well … maybe I did … now I’m

Five days on the run, no relief, no sanctuary
Five days on the road, days were hot, the nights were cold
Five days on the run, in a panic, solitary
Was a young man when I started, five days later feeling pretty old
Growing old

The Sheriff came to call so I packed up my bags, I packed my irons
And I headed for the outback in a record setting dash,
I ran fast as I can
Staggering and gasping for my breath I crossed the river, nearly drowned
But I made it out of town    … and since then …  I’ve been

Five days on the run, no relief, no sanctuary
Five days on the road, days were hot, the nights were cold
Five days on the run, in a panic, solitary
Was a young man when I started, five days later feeling pretty old
Growing old

But I won’t let them take me in
For a crime that’s not a sin
But there’s no way I can win

Five days on the run, no relief, no sanctuary
Five days on the road, days were hot, the nights were cold
Five days on the run, in a panic, solitary
Was a young man when I started, five days later feeling pretty old
Now I’m growing old
Now I’m growing old
Out on the road
I was a young man when I started,
Five days later, feeling pretty old
Troubadour

I am a minstrel, a singer of old songs,
If you know the words I wish you'd sing along.
I am a vagabond, take my hand and come with me,
We'll find a spot along the way to uncover memories.

I am a songster, and we can write a song,
Build us a story and I'm glad that you're along.
You are my muse, and you've opened up my mind,
We can sing a song about that perfect time.

I am a troubadour, finding notes along the way,
And you are the song that makes me want to stay,
I am a troubadour, finding love along the way,
You're bringing me around, and clearing skies of gray

I am a minstrel, a singer of old songs,
If you know the words I wish you'd sing along.
I am a vagabond, take my hand and come with me,
We'll find a spot along the way to uncover memories

I am a troubadour, finding notes along the way,
And you are the song that makes me want to stay,
I am a troubadour, finding love along the way,
You're bringing me around, and clearing skies of gray

Got the fire in my soul
The fire deep down in my belly (don’t you know)
I’ve got the fire in my soul
Think it’s ‘cause I ate those jalapeños

She asked me on a first date
She said I’m cookin’ for ya, so don’t be late
I think she came from Mexico
‘Cause she said I hope you like those jalapeños

I showed up right at seven
She looked a sight from heaven when she came to let me in
She brought me to her kitchen
My mouth didn’t water but my eyes sure did

Got the fire in my soul
The fire deep down in my belly (don’t you know)
I’ve got the fire in my soul
Think it’s ‘cause I ate those jalapeños

I like a little barbecue and buffalo wings
I usually can eat about anything
I like Szechuan and I like Thai
But my baby’s jalapeños made mecry!

I wanted to impress her
Wanted more than that, I hoped to wake up next to her
We sat down at the table
I ate up all the hots but now I wonder why I did…

I like a little barbecue and buffalo wings
I usually can eat about anything
Now I like Szechuan and I like Thai
But my baby’s jalapeños made mecry!

I had to take a rain check
Couldn’t put the fire out, my belly was a wreck
I thought she’d want a new guy
But she called me yesterday to say the chili’s have arrived! (oh yeah!)

Got the fire in my soul
The fire deep down in my belly (don’t you know)
I’ve got the fire in my soul
Think it’s ‘cause I ate those jalapeños
I know it’s ‘cause I ate those jalapeños
Never should have ate those jalapeños

Mud Slingin’
by Martin Decato

My buddy and me went off one night to a place where the coons and possums fight
A place that we called State Road 33
We drove out trucks off into the mud and all of the sudden I heard a big thud,
before I know it I was in a hole and was stuck.

My motor quit running and my tire went flat and we didn’t know where in the hell we were at
Then we saw some lights coming ‘round the curve.
I was a big old guy in a four wheel drive and we saw him snicker as he drove by,
But we didn’t say a word cause we had enough trouble as it was.
He didn’t even offer to pull us out but I reckon that’s what mud slingin’s all about
And we’re stuck in the woods on State Road 33.

Mud slinging, something we can’t live without, mud slingin, that’s what it’s all about
Mud slingin, I’ll never do it again but that’s what I say every time that we go out.

About the time we’d given up hope we saw more lights coming up the road but
This time it wasn’t a big old four wheel drive.
He stepped out of his car and was dressed in blue with lights on the top that matched his suit,
and we knew we were in trouble as soon as he shined his light.
He started writing that ticket before he got to us and I told my buddy that we’d done blew it
and about that time the cop slipped and fell on his back.

We started to go help him get up but here come my friend in is pick up truck,
He hooked up the chain and pulled us out and we were gone.
We started down the road and we didn’t look back cause we knew if we did he’d be on our tracks,
So we just laughed and said that’s what it’s all about.

Mud slinging, something we can’t live without, mud slingin, that’s what it’s all about
Mud slingin, I’ll never do it again but that’s what I say every time that we go out.

Playing My Part

Time, time is the answer for laughter
We’ll laugh, ‘cause laughter’s the answer for love
We’ll love, as long as there’s time for the laughter
No question there’s time
For some love

Home,home is an alien concept
I’ve asked, never got answers for why
I’ve lost, lost any sense of direction
I’ve lost not just time
But your love
Lost your love

I’ve questioned myself
I’ve questioned your place in my heart
I’ve questioned it all
Including the answers
I’ve laughed at them all
When they said I’d be sorry
‘Cause I’m only playing
My part

I act, act like I know where I’m going
On stage, never got down to the aisles
I’ve known, known all my lines for a while now
But never learned how
To win your love
Can’t find your love

I’ve questioned myself
I’ve questioned your place in my heart
I’ve questioned it all
Including the answers
I’ve laughed at them all
When they said I’d be sorry
‘Cause I’m only playing
My part
33 Summers
byMartin Decato

He got here in the spring and headed for home in early fall
With 33 Summers in between
His taillights had faded to nothing in the dark
And he drove away with all his broken dreams

He took a wrong turn to the left and found an empty muddy road
But he backed up and tried his luck again
Over an over till he couldn't make it through
But the allure of the darkness pulled him in

He went down the road alone, looking for a sign
Something he had to understand
Speeding through his time not knowing what was next
And hoping someone would take his hand

He never got to see his thirty-fourth winter
Or another day of sunshine on the farm
Giving into what beckoned him in the dark beyond
He let the emptiness enfold him in it's arms

He went down the road alone, looking for a sign
Something he had to understand
Speeding through his time, not knowing what was next
And hoping someone would take his hand
Stay Inside Today
by Scott Sanborn

Little brother sat on the banks of the bayou
Waiting for the sun to rise and the dawn to find you
Little birdie sang as if it’s trying to mock you
Living in the past will always destroy you

Stay inside today, tomorrow comes the pain of saying goodbye, goodbye
So long to yesterday
Tomorrow comes our way
With nothing left to say but goodbye

Little sister sang a song of sweet remembrance
Melancholy melody about a lover’s dependence
Now the love is gone and sister’s feeling helpless
Living in the past breaks all your defenses (down)

Stay inside today, tomorrow comes the pain of saying goodbye, goodbye
So long to yesterday
Tomorrow comes our way
With nothing left to say but goodbye

Little sister sat on the banks of the bayou
Little brother smiled ‘cause now he had someone to talk to
Now today is not so much trouble to get through
Living in the past, now it’s all behind you

Stay inside today, tomorrow comes the pain of saying goodbye, goodbye
So long to yesterday
Tomorrow comes our way
With nothing left to say but goodbye

Sidewalk Serenader
byMartin Decato
©2018

I was walking through a railroad town one sunny day in June
When I thought I heard a busker singing out his lonely tune.
The smell of cigarettes and whisky was hanging on the breeze
His voice was slightly worn as he tried to stay on key.

I saw the shadow of his fingers as they strummed across the strings
I heard a leather sole tap as his guitar began to ring
I felt his lonely soul reaching out like some old eerie spell
Listen to the sidewalk serenader, he has a tale to tell.

He sang a song about a love he lost so many years ago
Regretful and remorseful, it seemed to haunt him so.
I tried to get a closer look but only saw his shadow
I wondered if somehow it was all he dared to show.

I saw the shadow of his fingers as they strummed across the strings
I heard a leather sole tap as his guitar began to ring
I felt his lonely soul reaching out like some old eerie spell
Listen to the sidewalk serenader, he has a tale to tell.

When he took a break I asked him if he'd sing a song for me
He rolled up a smoke and said listen boy now, can't you see
If I do the one about the Troubadour I'll put your thoughts back in hell
Cause I'm the sidewalk serenader and I have a tale to tell.

Then a shadow from a cloud above crept down the sunny street
Taking with it when it left, the lonely soul that I did meet.
His shadow was gone and I was the one left standing there,
And I had to stop and wonder was he ever really there.

I saw the shadow of his fingers as they strummed across the strings
I heard a leather sole tap as his guitar began to ring
I felt his lonely soul reaching out like some old eerie spell
Listen to the sidewalk serenader, he has a tale to tell.
